I live in santa cruz.i have a bmw would it b cheaper 2 take it 2 a shop 4 an oil change or do it myself?

It's far, far cheaper to do it yourself.

The oil and filter cost the same if the Dealer completes the service or if you buy them from the dealer.

You'll save $100 to $200 on labor costs.

This answer assumes you have all the tools needed. If you have to buy them, you're talking up to $200 to get the tools (but much cheaper if you hire them).

You do the math.

I hope this helps,

Depends on what oil you buy and what oil the shop uses. Also, you need a filter. Add up the costs to see for yourself. You will also need an oil filter wrench - a one time expense.

Wal-Mart may have the filter size you need; if you do this regularly, try to buy them on sale. Used oil can often be turned in at some auto parts stores where you buy the new oil. In our area a place that does it is called Shucks. I think in California they go by the name Kragen.I live in santa cruz.i have a bmw would it b cheaper 2 take it 2 a shop 4 an oil change or do it myself?
You will need the right filter. Walmart does not carry it and the Fram ones at the major chains are not very good. Buy it from the dealer or online from bimmerparts.com or bavauto.com.

Use a good synthetic that meets the weight (ie 5w40) listed in the owners manual. Mobil 1 is OK. Royal Purple is good. Amsoil is good stuff too.

Oil change will cost about $40 yourself - can't be beat! Buy a Bentley manual and start saving a lot of money by working on the car yourself. Saves lots money and provides instant gratification!
If you do it you self it would be cheaper because then you don't pay for labor. And every garage is going to rip you off anyways so might as well do it on your own.
I have a friend in Santa Cruz that owns two BMW's and is always doing side jobs for local BMW owners. If you'd like, contact me for his number.

look around for a garage that as a sucker ,they put it down the dip stick hole and suck the oil out free of charge if you buy the new oil from them.
doing things yourself is always cheaper than paying someone else to do it that is if you know how its not hard to learn go get your hands dirty
