Would it be proper to display an oil painting in a living room by resting it on a mantle and against the wall?

And NOT putting a nail on the wall? I would put mirror brackets to hold the framed painting on the fireplace mantle? Would it be proper in the aesthetic sense? Or would it look out of place or ';gross';? Any suggestions you might have will be appreciated. Thanks.Would it be proper to display an oil painting in a living room by resting it on a mantle and against the wall?
Unless the painting is just a cheap one you bought in Walmart that is less expensive than a couple of nails, it deserves to be hung properly As it sits there slanting toward the wall on the top it will collect a lot of dust and soon look grimy and dust-covered. Go first class and hang it..Would it be proper to display an oil painting in a living room by resting it on a mantle and against the wall?
Do you use the fireplace? Is it possible for the painting to suffer damage from heat from the fireplace? Those apply regardless of whether you rest it on the mantle or hang it.

As far as resting on the mantle, you want something to keep it from sliding off. You could use a bit of the rubber mesh sold to put under mats or sold for use under a wood work piece with some tools such as routers and finish sanders. Alternatively there are thin foam products used to keep upholstry cushions on couches and chairs.
i see nothing wrong with it especially if you can accent it with a plant or a nice figurine
I have seen it done many times.
