have to agree with previous comments, although it depends on how you have styled your house. bearing in mind the mantle-place will not really add anything to the painting but it would depend on the mantle and also the painting. a jazzy coloured or strong grained mantle would not let a subtle painting be noticed/appreciated.Would it be proper to display an oil painting in a living room by resting it on a mantle and against the wall?
Yes that is absolutely fine to do that.
It's your painting and so do as you see fit.
Anyone who judges you for that leaning the painting as opposed to hole from nail in wall is not worth impressing in the first place.
There's no rule that states knocking a nail into a wall validates the art any more than simply resting the art against the wall.
Also, you needn't even frame the art if you're not in the mood to do so.
Remember:
The ONLY rule to art is : ';There ARE NO RULES';.
You can even move the painting around the house on a regular basis if you want to. It's entirely up to you and there is no ';right/wrong or PROPER'; to be considered about it.
Do as YOU see fit.
Enjoy your painting and enjoy the hole-free wall as well.^^
There is no 'right' or 'wrong' when it comes to displaying your art....in fact how you display your art can become part of the art itself!
don't worry about 'proper'. Unless you're having your apartment reviewed by an art magazine - who cares?!!
I have art all over my house...one painting rests on the back of the toilet!
ENJOY your art - that's why you have it - right?
avoid the mantle if you have a fire under it,it will damage the oil in the long run, otherwise shouldnt be a problem
It is always proper to be creative when decorating.
Go for it..............art is very forgiving and not really that fussy just as long as you enjoy it.
